Costco Hearing Aids Have Not Worked for a Year

by Linda M Gilliam, Daughter of Needa Kreutz

OUR POOR 91 YEAR OLD MOM FINALLY WAS TALKED INTO HER HEARING AIDS AT COSTCO, BY HER FRIENDS AND DAUGHTERS.

SHE WAS VERY EXCITED AT THE THOUGHT OF IMPROVED HEARING, AS WERE WE. LOSS OF HEARING IS SO LIMITING.

...THEY HAVE NEVER WORKED RIGHT SINCE SHE PURCHASED OVER A YEAR AGO. THE FIRST TECH WAS NOT EVEN FAMILIAR WITH THE NUMBER OF LOUDNESS DIAL 1-3...AND LATER AFTER SEVERAL ADJUSTMENTS...THEY STILL GIVE HER A HEADACHE!

>>> THE AMBIENT NOISE IS WORSE THAN HEARING ANYTHING.
SHE STILL CANN0T HEAR A MOVIE, TV ...OR WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING. ( THAT MAKES A PERSON FEEL VERY ISOLATED.)

IN ADDITION, THEY SQUEAL WHEN YOU GET CLOSE OR GIVE HER A HUG!

OUR MOM IS STILL VERY BRIGHT AND NEEDS TO TRY ANOTHER TYPE....EVEN IF IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE.
IN ALL FAIRNESS, I FEEL HER INITIAL INVESTMENT SHOULD BE APPLIED TOWARDS A BETTER TYPE LIKE "WIDEX...FLASH" MICRO SERIES.

SURE HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP US???
WE HAD HEARD FROM MANY THAT COSTCO WANTS TO MAKE "THINGS RIGHT"..AND WE DO TOO.

Take it slow

Do not think that $3000+ hearing aids will be any different. They WONT.

This is what hearing aid dealers prey on; those who feel like there are no more options left and then you spend $8000 on a pair of hearing aids that are NO BETTER than the one's available for under $3000.00 at costco.

As noted below, your mother has been living in a quiet world for a long time. Have the fitter reduce the volume 4-5 dB, more if necessary. As for the squealing during hugs, ensure that the hearing aids are in her ears all the way; the number one cause of squealing is improper insertion. If not the insertion, wax buildup in the ears. If this is not the case, see the fitter and have the feedback reduction re-calibrated.

Good luck.

91 years old...a late start

Your mom's loss probably started many years before she got her aids. She's been living in a quiet world a long time.

It is very difficult to habituate to hearing aids in that case. The frequency response of the aids should be verified in her ears with real ear measures. Having done that, if she can't tolerate the suggested (target) level of amplification to start, ask the dispenser to decrease the volume 4 to 5 dB.

Once she has accepted that level, take her back to have them turned up (a month or two later). She has to wear them at least 6 to 8 hrs. every day to train her brain. This is not like buying eyeglasses... Getting used to hearing aids is tough, and there is no magic hearing aid. Clattering and other sharp sounds will be enhanced because they are happening in the same range as speech. Good luck.

Ask for refund - it is worth a try

Costco has a 90 day money back policy on hearing aids. But I think you should try a second Costco for help with programming the aids or ask for your money back, even though it is past the 90 days.

It is worth a try.

I am reading all these comments because I purchased a Costco pair myself. My hearing is improved, but still miss a lot of words.
